ASL Level 1

American Sign Language I offered as ENGLISH 101 and EDU T&L 101.

This course is for students with no previous course work in American Sign Language (ASL). It begins by developing skills necessary for reliance on vision as the primary means of communicative interaction. Expressive (speaking) and comprehension (listening) skills will be developed at an informal conversational level. Instruction will occur primarily in ASL. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to have simple conversations about themselves and their immediate surroundings. Students will also study ASL in America and consider the experience of life with a visual language.
 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Students will be able to ask yes/no and Wh- questions.
  • Students will be able to respond appropriately to questions.
  • Students will be able to make affirmative and negative statements.
  • Students will be able to recite numbers 1-50.
  • Students will be able to get an interlocutor's attention in culturally appropriate ways.
  • Students will be able to introduce themselves and others in culturally appropriate ways.
  • Students will be able to ask for repetition or clarification in a conversation as needed to insure comprehension.
  • Students will be able to discuss ASL in America.
  • Students will be able to discuss cultural adaptations to life with a visual language.
