ASL Level 3 (students may choose EITHER 103 or 113 regardless of major/minor)

American Sign Language III is offered as SPEECH & HEARING 103 and EDU T&L 113.

This course will further enhance students' communication skills using American Sign Language (ASL) to interact with Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and their parents/significant others. The focus in this class will be on developing those language and communication skills necessary for competent interactions about a variety of topics in various settings. The course will also broaden the student's understanding and appreciation of Deaf culture and the experiences of and challenges faced by those individuals who are deaf and/or hard-of-hearing. Students will be expected to understand ASL communication presented at a faster pace and increase the speed of their own expressive skills.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to demonstrate:

  • Increased speed and fluency of expressive ASL skills.
  • Expanded knowledge of ASL vocabulary and grammar.
  • Understanding of the history and evolution of the varieties of sign systems and ASL (including variations) in America.
  • Knowledge of the issues surrounding the Deaf/hard-of-hearing communities regarding technology and language options.
  • Increased awareness of cultural differences between Deaf/hard-of-hearing and hearing communities and hearing cultures, including individuals who may belong to many minority cultural groups.
