GEC Information

Most Ohio State undergraduates are required to complete a foreign language sequence as part of their General Education Curriculum (GEC).  Since 2002, students have been able to complete American Sign Language levels 1-4 (four classes, or 20 credit hours) to fulfill this GEC requirement.  Some students are able to receive Credit by Exam (EM Credit) or Transfer Credit for GEC credit hours.  Students who have taken ASL in high school should take the placement test.

Note: Speech & Hearing 714-716 and EDU T&L 754 are not part of the ASL-GEC language sequence.  If students have taken these courses and then would like to complete their GEC sequence in ASL, they need to take the ASL placement test.

Descriptions of Individual Courses in the American Sign Language Sequence.

The Department of English offers ASL 1 & 2. The department of Speech & Hearing Sciences currently offers ASL 3 & 4. And the department of Education: Teaching Learning offers all four levels of ASL. Students may take their ASL 1-4 courses in any department, regardless of one's major or minor.  Students are required to take courses from two different departments/colleges in order to satisfy the GEC requirement. (Students cannot take all four ASL courses in Education.)  Classes at each level, regardless of the department, use the same text and generally cover the same content. And all of the classes, when taken and successfully completed in sequence, fulfill the university's GEC language requirement.
