Autumn 2009 Placement Tests will be held on:
- Monday, October 12th between 1:00 - 4:00pm
- Friday, November 20th between 12:00- 4:00pm
All tests must be scheduled in advance with the coordinator,
Tia Jones. Contact: jones.2246@osu.edu or (614) 292-5392.
What is the placement test?
A tool that evaluates a student's sign production and comprehension skills as well as knowledge of ASL linguistics and deaf culture. Taking the placement test results in examination credit (EM credit) and a placement into the ASL-GEC sequence (levels 1-4).
Do I have to take the placement test? Yes, if you...
- took two or more years of American Sign Language in high school, within the last 5 years
- feel your skills are appropriate for ASL 2 or higher, have been admitted to the university unconditionally, and hope to begin the series higher than level 1
Can I take the placement test if I have taken SPH&HRNG 714,716, 718 and/or EDU T&L 754?
Yes, this is an option if you feel your skills are appropriate for ASL 2 or higher.
NOTE: Taking the placement exam does not guarantee that you will earn EM credit.
How much does it cost? $75.00
- payment must be in the form of a check, payable to The Ohio State University
- payment is due on the day of the test
When is the test offered?
- twice each quarter (Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer) on the Columbus campus
- during the 4th and 9th weeks of the quarter
- Specific dates and times are determined at the beginning of each quarter. Contact the test coordinator to schedule your placement test.
Who do I contact to schedule? Tia Jones. Contact at jones.2246@osu.edu or 614-292-5392.
*Note* This will impact your scheduling. If you take the placement exam during the 9th week of the quarter and earn credit for a course, you most likely will not be eligible to register for the next course level until two quarters later!
Can I register for the following quarter as soon as I receive my results? No. It may take up to 6 weeks for your results to be processed and posted to your transcript. You can register for class after your results appear on your transcript.
If I take the test during the 4th week of the quarter, can I register for class the following quarter? Yes, if your transcripts have record of the results, however, this may not be in time for the registration window.
If I take the test during the 9th week of the quarter, can I register for class the following quarter? No, because your results will most likely not yet be posted. You are recommended to register for the following quarter.
- If you do not test into level 2 or higher and still wish to take ASL, you must register for level 1.
- Students who test into level 2 or higher will receive EM Credit for the courses below the placement. For example, if you test into level 3, you will have earned a total of 10 credit hours for levels 1 and 2 (5 credit hours each) and can register for level 3.
- If you feel it would be in your best interest to take a class lower than the level you were placed, contact the test coordinator.
Can I re-take the test if I don't like my results?
No. In accordance with University policy, no Credit by Examination test can be taken more than once. Although the evaluation procedures instituted at Ohio State have, in general, proven to be reliable, occasionally students may be placed in a course that they find too easy. In such cases, students are asked to contact Mrs. Tia Jones. Mrs. Jones will conduct a review of the test to determine if the placement was appropriate. She will then discuss the outcome of the test review with the student.
What does the test look like? The test includes two portions:
- Written (short answer): Evaluates the student's understanding of ASL linguistics and deaf culture.
- Practical/Performance(signing): Evaluates the student's production and comprehension abilities during a one-on-one signed conversation with a trained deaf evaluator. The practical portion is recorded for evaluation and documentation.
What if I need test accommodations? In the case of students who may have a learning disability, need special arrangements and/or petitions, contact the Office for Disability Services. We will provide accommodations to the best of our ability for students who are registered with ODS.
