Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Signing the National Anthem

"Oh say, can you see..." those hands on the field?

They are the Ohio State University's American Sign Language Students performing the National Anthem! Since 2005, OSU students in ASL have been performing at every home football and men's basketball games. Under the direction of Senior Lecturer, Tamara Steele, students learn how to sign the National Anthem and Carmen Ohio in American Sign Language. Then on game day, the group comes together to display their signing skills on the field. Not only do our ASL students have this unique opportunity to use what they have learned in class, but Deaf OSU fans appreciate our efforts seeing the songs in their language. We have had several Deaf fans stop by to wave hello, introduce themselves and chat in Sign Language with our students before the games. Our ASL students are using their skills and building relationships with the Deaf community in Buckeye Nation. Look for us during pre-game on the 15-yard line at the north end of the Ohio Stadium, and on center court of the Schottenstein Center.
